Milwaukee's V28™ battery technology, the first lithium-ion
battery perfected for use with “high current draw”
applications like power tools. While typical Ni-Cd and NiMH power
tool batteries are capable of providing higher voltages, this
extra power comes with a weight penalty. Consequently, the highest
practical application for NiCd and NiMH has been the 18 volt tool
platform. |

The V28™ battery now provides 28 volts of power at a
weight that is slightly less than the current 18 volt battery. The
benefit of that added voltage lies in the fact that the V28™
battery delivers significantly more power, up to twice the run
time, and fade-free, consistent power throughout each usage cycle.
In addition, unlike Ni-Cd and NiMH battery platforms, the
revolutionary V28™ battery performs significantly better in
extreme conditions such as hot or cold temperatures. |

industry have said that higher voltages just were not possible for
power tools, without adding the additional weight that made the
tools impractical. For nine years Milwaukee Electric Tool
Company has been working to prove them wrong. V28™
battery technology represents several years, and millions of
dollars, worth of research and development. |
|
To
make lithium-ion capable of powering high current draw
applications, Milwaukee’s researchers turned to lithium
manganese and optimized
a cell to deliver high power and long run time while providing
better than expected battery life. Eventually the research
perfected a larger sized battery cell than traditionally seen in
today’s common lithium-ion applications. Milwaukee added an
encapsulated robust electronic circuit, resulting in what they
call a ‘smart battery’ and has done an excellent job in
developing the V28™ battery that delivers up to 2 ˝ times the
work of an 18 volt NiCd battery while weighing slightly less.”
An important
feature is the inclusion of a fuel gauge on the battery pack so
users always know how much power is left in the battery. Other
benefits offered by lithium ion over NiCd and NiMH cells include
fade-free consistent power throughout the entire discharge cycle
(the last cut, hole drilled, etc. is as powerful as the first), a
significantly reduced self-discharge rate (the rate at which a
battery discharges while simply sitting on the shelf), and
significantly improved performance when exposed to extreme cold or
hot working environments.
Optimized battery performance translates to
enhanced productivity and efficiency for tradespeople. With the
increased power and run time of the V28™ battery, end users can,
for the first time, turn to cordless power tools like circular
saws and reciprocating saws as their primary tools. And because of
its additional power and run time, power tools that were not
practical as cordless, such as the band saw, are now included in
